The Plano City Council recently agreed to pay Dallas contractor Weir Bros. Inc. $20,000 more to use low-polluting dry kiln cement in a $4.9 million road-widening project. This is the latest eco-conscious move by The City of Plano, which joined RPN last year and rolled out a new Environmental Purchasing Policy (EPP) that called on City departments and divisions to “purchase and use materials, products and services that are economically responsible and reduce resource consumption and waste within federal, state and local laws.”
Plano isn't the only jurisdiction in the region making eco-conscious choices, according to The Dallas Morning News, which reports that "a growing number of North Texas cities have, on occasion, favored the environment over cost in purchasing road supplies, office furniture and other materials." Dallas recently invested in waste hauling trucks fueled by cleaner-burning compressed natural gas.
