NYC's New Hybrid Buses Saving Money

February 21, 2008

New York City’s newer hybrid buses are cheaper to operate, costing 40 percent less to maintain and 24 percent less to operate than previous hybrids, according to a new report from the DOE’s National Renewable Energy Lab. MTA New York City Transit recently ordered 850 new Orion VII Next Generation diesel hybrid electrical buses (HEBs), bringing MTA’s HEB fleet to almost 1700 buses and making it the largest HEB fleet in the world.  Compared to standard diesel buses, the HEBs deliver up to 30 percent better fuel economy and cut emissions of particulate matter by 90 percent and nitrogen oxides by 40 percent.
