The Promise and Perils of Eco-Labels

Eco-labels can be an incredibly useful tool for purchasers.  It isn’t always easy to ascertain if one product is more “green” than another or if its environmental claims are true.  Eco-labels can help facilitate the procurement of responsible products because, when credible, they provide an objective authentication of environmental assertions and ensure products meet varying environmental and human health requirements.

What do the new ENERGY STAR changes mean for responsible purchasers?  Learn all about the new, more stringent changes, and have the opportunity to ask questions directly to ENERGY STAR staff at RPN’s upcoming webinar on May 6, from 3-4 PM (EDT). LEED Purchasing Points Factsheets Now Available 
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Purchasing Points fact sheets are now available for purchasers who are wondering how to earn LEED credits for their responsible procurement.  The factsheet breaks down how purchasing can yield credits in eight different LEED standards, including: New Construction and Major Renovations, Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance, Commercial Interiors, Core and Shell, Schools, Retail: New Construction & Major Renovations, Retail: Commercial Interiors, and Homes.  To download the new factsheets, please click here
STARS Purchasing Points Factsheet Now Available
Colleges and universities can use AASHE’s (the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education) STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System) program to measure and report progress on sustainability.  And earning STARS credits through responsible procurement decisions has never been easier, thanks to RPN’s new Factsheet for STARS credits.  The two page factsheet shows how purchasers can earn credits in Education & Research and Operations Categories.  To download the new factsheets, please click here.     
Model Responsible Purchasing Report Now Available
The RPN Model Responsible Purchasing Report is now available to download for RPN members.  This report helps purchasers track their responsible purchasing and create their own responsible purchasing report.  It is divided into two parts: a Guidance Document and a Template Document.  Together, these two resources can help any purchasing program report on their responsible purchasing initiatives to communicate successes to stakeholders.  The Report is available to RPN Members only here.        

Tracking and Reporting Responsible Purchasing Webinar Now Available for Download
With over 230 attendees, RPN’s latest webinar on Tracking and Reporting Responsible Purchasing was our most popular webinar to date.  The webinar covered the RPN Model Responsible Purchasing Report, and strategies for tracking purchases, calculating costs and environmental benefits, and conveying socially responsible and environmentally preferable purchasing efforts in a report. Non-members can download the Webinar presentation slides here.  RPN Members have access to the entire Webinar recording, including presentation slides, here.  

RPN Annual Survey and Trends Report
Remember to take part in the 2010 RPN Annual Trends Survey today.  Your input is the basis for the annual RPN Trends Report that provides the definitive overview of the field.  As leaders in responsible procurement, RPN members have insight into the opportunities and challenges facing responsible purchasing programs.  Your feedback is vital for a comprehensive RPN’s 2010 Annual Trends Report.  Participate now in our Trends Survey and provide your valuable input.  Special thanks to members of the Responsible Purchasing Network who have already completed the 2010 RPN Trends Survey.

Seattle City Light Takes ‘Next Step’ in Residential Energy Savings
The City of Seattle is now offering free installation of energy-efficient products to seniors, low-income residents, and non-English speaking households.  Seattle City Light, which received $500,000 in federal stimulus funds and invested an additional $1.2 million, estimates that 2.5 million kilowatt-hours of electricity will be saved for every 5,000 homes impacted.  More More
Six New Hybrid Buses to be Purchased by Charlotte with Stimulus Funds
The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) has been awarded $3 million in stimulus funds for the procurement of six hybrid buses as part of its clean air initiative.  CATS estimates that the new hybrid buses will save over 19,000 gallons of fuel annually and remove 2,600 tons of carbon dioxide from the air over the next 12 years.  Currently, the CATS hybrid fleet has seven buses.   More More
14 Campuses Offset Emissions from Laundry Machines
Mac-Gray, a campus laundry service company, has teamed up with RPN Member Carbonfund.org to offset 100 percent of carbon emissions from its campus laundry equipment. Through a $95,000 investment in Carbonfund.org carbon reduction projects, Mac-Gray will offset over 21 million pounds of GHG emissions at colleges and universities across the U.S., including RPN Member Stonehill College.  More More
  Orange County, CA to Hold First Annual Green Fair in 2010
Join Orange County, CA for the launch of their campaign to raise public awareness of environmental concerns and how individual consumers, can reduce their impact on the earth by selecting sustainable eco-friendly products and services.  The fair will take place May 20, 2010 from 10am-3pm in Santa Ana, CA.  More More
